Stone Walkways

Building in a stone walkway through your backyard garden, around your swimming pool or garage, and even from your frontyard out to the street is one of the key elements of a professional landscape design. The stonescape path is an integrating feature of landscaping, a path where all the rest of your landscape features are presented to the visitor. Adding stone to your pathways makes the journey through your garden landscape a special visit.

Perhaps the main difference between stone walkways and stone paths is that walkways are designed for heavier traffic or where people might not be as careful about their footfalls. Stone paths may have less stones with wide gaps between them which might be okay for remote areas on your property but not for highly trafficked areas of your property.

A stone walkway should be one that allows strolling visitors to relax and enjoy every flower and plant they meet along the way. A stone path is one that requires a lot of attention from the person strolling. All too often people actually avoid walking on stone paths and instead walk on the grass lawn adjacent. With backyard landscapes, it's all about the visitor experience. By using a solid stone pathway, you're creating a more inviting experience for your visitors.

If stone paths are over your budget, you might consider brick pavers or poured concrete for your walkway. Interlocking bricks can be laid in a wide array of configurations for very pleasing effects. However, your walkway design should distract the viewer with colors, shapes and patterns that aren't consistent with your garden landscape. A landscape architect or landscape designer can give you ideas and help you avoid a tacky looking result.
