Hardscaping
Landscapers may use the term hardscaping to describe the shaping and use of inanimate elements such as masonry, bricks, or rock. However, hardscaping may also include benches, arbors, gazebos, decks, fencing, lighting, sculptures, fountains, birdhouses, sheds, and walkways. This contrasts with softscaping which is the layout and patterning of plants in the yard.
Hardscaping could be described by some as the skeletal structure of a landscape. Garden landscape designers might refer to garden hardscapes differently however. To a designer who focuses on the final appearance of a living work of art, may see hardscapes as just a small, almost out of site underlay to the living garden landscape. In casual settings or in garden landscaping, it is the plants and trees themselves that are the dominant element. In more formal settings, the hardscape may be the dominant feature of a property.

In garden landscaping, it is the layout, configuration, and patterning of plants that provides the structure of a yard. The lay of the property and the dirt or turf pathways become the hardscape.
Today, many property owners prefer to utilize hardscaping elements seeing it as perhaps more important than the plants themselves. Today, most major landscape projects incorporate hardscaping features such as brick flower beds, paving stones, brick pathways, brick fences, concrete patios, flagstone patios, and concrete bases for gazebos.
For those looking to increase the value of their property, hardscaping can make their home look impressive. Hardscaping around ponds, swimming pools, water fountains, driveways, and decks can significantly improve the landscape appearance, keep the areas cleaner, and even control or contain the damage from a severe storm.
