Landscape Design - Ponds

As in any form of water feature landscaping, ponds require some maintenance, whether they're formed from plastic liners or are natural excavated areas of your property. Installation can be easy to difficult depending on the size, location and materials you want to use. A classic type of pond is the brick pond with a wall where a stream of water is released. Often a mask or stone bust of a human head or even an animal provides a point of exit for the water stream into the pond below. Other times, a fountain may be placed at the side or in the center of the pond. If you want a classical, timeless addition to your landscape, water may be for you.

A pond is not only an attractive landscape feature; it can be used to feed other plant forms in the yard. There are infinite possibilities, such as a cascading waterfall, floating pond lilies, waterways or canals leading in and out, and even a bog for any swampy critters you'd like to have living there.

Of course, in this type of landscaping, the pond really isn't the key feature. It’s the plants along with the rocky, terraced features you build into the pond. Trees and shrubs can provide a natural protective barrier. Water plants are a necessity but you'll want to choose the right ones for your pond.

Concrete masonry is not the most common approach used anymore because of the expense. Today's materials and construction techniques allow for a strong, flexible liner for the pond bottom made of butyl rubber or fiberglass. For larger ponds, you will probably have a flexible liner placed on top of an excavated area. Flexible liners allow you to shape the pond anyway you like, or to fit into the tight awkward space you have available. Flagstones can be used around the edging to keep it natural looking.
